The Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation and Rocket Science by Caldwell today announce the formation of a strategic alliance whose mission is to create and fund practical, hands-on programs that are designed to inspire and engage the next generation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The foundation’s Mavericks Explorers Program conducts educational and research opportunities through sub-orbital space missions designed, built, and flown by high school students, enabling them to demonstrate their mastery of the four fundamental disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

MavSAT Sub-orbital Research Mission

While NASA and a number of new venture funded start-ups are moving forward in commercializing PhoneSAT spacecraft technology, Mavericks has developed its own version of the PhoneSAT as a reference design for open-source licensing and use by middle schools, high schools, and university students and civilians to begin building and operating their own space craft. Named the MavSAT, and given a broader mission capability that just orbital flight operations capabilities, the MavSAT 1.0 will be test flown on a Beagle IV sounding rocket in this mission, in a similar operation shown in teh video from 2010, as a test of the MavSAT vehicle and deployment system components shown below.

URSA Sub-orbital Research Mission

The URSA Project team will use the computational fluid dynamic simulation program ANSYS to create and import the rocket vehicle design geometry from the SolidWorks model of a URSA reference design sub-obital sounding rocket to predict the gas dynamics characteristics and resulting aerodynamic stability of the URSA reference design vehicle throughout its anticipated flight envelope.
